Handicap Parking Signs Requirements
The standard width of parking space for cars with a disabled person is 8 feet wide for normal cars, while 11 feet for vans. There should be an existing aisle on the sides with a width of 5 feet, allowing wheelchairs to have easy access. Usually, parking spaces like this have a ramp to the pavement for the wheelchairs to make it easier to transport the disabled. Clearance to the ceiling must be at least 98 inches to allow access for wheelchair lifts.

Handicap Markings in the Aisle
The aisle is also painted with hatch marks to make sure that no one will think about parking in that space. Although it might be a small space for vehicles, it might be mistaken by motor users and block the aisle, which can result in towing away and even arrest.
The surface of the aisles, as well as the parking space itself, must be smooth and stable, with an equal level of the surface to ensure the safety of the people with disabilities.

How Many Parking Spaces Are Required For The Handicapped?

Counting the possible number of parking spaces for disabled must be calculated on a ratio of one out of six, with at least one or two spaces allocated for vans. If the parking space exceeds over 1000, it should be around 20 and adding 1 space again for each additional 100.

The ratio will be different for medical facilities. Hospitals that caters outpatients need to comply at least 10% parking spaces available for patients or disabled person. Meanwhile, rehabilitation centers and facilities must cater to at least 20% of the parking space to be accessible for patients, especially those in a wheelchair.
